Mariaceleste Arena (Messina, 1993) is a visual artist whose work navigates the fine line between the archaeology of the imagination and the contemporary world.
Having honed her craft through a variety of artistic languages—from traditional drawing to digital manipulation—Arena has developed an artistic vision in which technique is always at the service of profound storytelling.

At the heart of Arena’s current work lies an aesthetic and symbolic exploration inspired by Marija Gimbutas’s studies on the Mother Goddess of Life and Regeneration. Her works are populated by hybrid creatures, in which the plant world merges with animal anatomy in a continuous process of metamorphosis. Among her favorite subjects, dinosaurs—a legacy of a childhood fascination—become, in her hands, visionary presences that defy the laws of biology.
The elephant plays a central role, serving as a key figure that bridges the artist’s Sicilian identity and the geological history of the Mediterranean. Drawing on the myth of the Cyclopes, the memory of prehistoric dwarf elephants, and the visual legacy of Giovanni Cammarata, the artist constructs an iconography that is both local and universal. This exploration engages with the stylistic signature of the Hlebine naïve school (Pietrini, Generalić, Večenaj), creating an imaginative bridge between the atmospheres of Northern and Southern Europe.

Alongside a celebration of life,  the artist explores the dark side of human emotion. insects—particularly the cockroach—becomes the cathartic tool through which the artist gives form to fears, nightmares, and inner shadows. In this sense, her work serves as a mirror of an existence in which fantasy and irony coexist with a subtle, necessary melancholy.

Mariaceleste Arena’s work has found expression in diverse contexts, from her participation in the Infiorata di Noto to urban renewal through street art (Borgo di Cannistrà, ME). Her illustrations have been featured in numerous publishing collaborations, confirming the versatility of an artist who, while working across painting,drawing and digital art maintains the coherence of a poetic world in constant, unstoppable metamorphosis.
